The breathing technique is more to help get your body out of the flight/fight response mode. As someone who often finds himself too in his own head sometimes during sex, the breathing technique is a good way to help re-center yourself.
As for how to apply it - here’s a tip that works for me: when you feel like your starting to lose your erection, use it as an opportunity to do other things to please your partner. Box breath still works when you’re using your hands or going down on your partner.
