It’s the weirdest sensation but I definitely feel the muscles moving

It’s really subtle. The sensation of pushing out a fart is helpful. If you’re still having trouble, do a regular kegel (squeeze your asshole closed). This helps you recognize what muscle you’re trying to feel.
